Jon Hamm Reveals Almost Landing Lead Role in "Gone Girl" Before Sticking with "Mad Men"

"Jon Hamm reveals how he nearly starred in 'Gone Girl' before committing to 'Mad Men,' and playfully teases Ben Affleck's hat choices."

In a recent interview on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," Jon Hamm, best known for his role as Don Draper in "Mad Men," shared an interesting revelation about his potential involvement in the hit thriller "Gone Girl." The 52-year-old actor disclosed that he had come close to securing the leading role of Nick Dunne, which eventually went to Ben Affleck.

During a video chat segment with fans, Hamm confirmed speculations from a 2015 report by PageSix that he was indeed considered for the role. He stated, "Yeah, I was down to the very end of that." However, due to commitments to "Mad Men" and the filming of its final season, Hamm had to pass on the opportunity, leading to Affleck's casting.

Hamm humorously mentioned how the film's creators were particularly excited about his potential involvement because both he and the character Dunne hail from St. Louis. Choosing to continue portraying Don Draper on "Mad Men" proved to be a wise decision for Hamm, as it earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series during the show's seventh and final season, which aired from 2007 to 2015.

Amidst the lighthearted discussion, Hamm couldn't resist playfully teasing Affleck, a passionate Boston Red Sox fan, about having to wear a St. Louis Cardinals hat in the film. He jokingly commented, "Poor Ben, he was not very happy about it." This jest was a reference to Affleck's refusal to wear a New York Yankees hat in a scene, causing a temporary production delay.

Affleck, in a 2014 interview with The New York Times, explained his reasoning behind rejecting the Yankees hat, stating, "I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it." Hamm playfully added that he empathized with Affleck's stance on the matter.

In conclusion, Hamm's revelation about almost landing the lead role in "Gone Girl" sheds light on the intriguing dynamics and behind-the-scenes decision-making processes in the world of filmmaking. While his commitment to "Mad Men" prevented him from stepping into Nick Dunne's shoes, it ultimately led to his well-deserved recognition and accolades for his exceptional portrayal of Don Draper.
